High-Voltage Through-Wall Conduit Safety: Key Precautions & Tips
2025-03-09 13:19:41

Installing high-voltage through-wall conduits demands strict adherence to safety and electrical codes. Follow these critical steps to avoid risks like fires, equipment damage, or code violations:

 1. Pre-Installation Must-Do’s

- Wall Assessment:

  - Use UL-listed rigid metal conduits (RMC) for concrete/masonry walls.

  - Choose liquid-tight flexible conduits (LFMC) for vibration-prone areas.

- Voltage Match: Ensure conduit ratings exceed system voltage (e.g., 35kV conduits for 33kV systems).

- Environmental Prep:

  - Seal gaps with fire-rated duct sealant in damp zones.

  - Allow thermal expansion with stainless steel expansion couplings.

 2. Code Compliance Essentials

- NEC Article 300.4: Maintain 3-inch clearance from gas/water pipes.

- Grounding: Bond metal conduits to the building’s ground using AWG 6 copper wire.

- Hole Sizing: Drill holes 10% larger than conduit OD to prevent structural stress.

 3. Avoid Costly Mistakes

- Poor Sealing: Leads to moisture ingress → Use IP68-rated epoxy for waterproofing.

- Over-Bending Cables: Follow NEC bend radius rules (e.g., 6x conduit diameter).

- Skipping Insulation Tests: Post-installation, use a Megger to confirm >100MΩ resistance.

 4. Safety Gear & Post-Install Checks

- PPE: Insulated gloves, arc-flash suits, and goggles.

- Post-Install Tests:

  - Verify grounding continuity (<1 ohm resistance).

  - Inspect for sharp edges or burrs.
